Class Notes

Tuesday January 31, 2012
Thank you, all, for returning your report cards.  I am sorry my computer will not let me send them by email, but it won't.  Therefore I have to give you a hard copy.  It saves me paer, ink and time when you return the original.
Since Lesson 33 was so long, we did it in class.  I didn't think we would get through the entire chapter, but you were so on task today that we could!  Thank you! It was full of information and names we couldn't pronounce.  The pronunciation of names is not as important as knowing the spelling and what these people did in history. So, while we got to abbreviate their names today, please take the time to learn how to spell them!  Words like: al-Andolus, Sefarad, and Cordoba as well as Tariq, Gibraltar, Abd al-Rahman, Abbasids, and Umayyads.  Perfectus and Eulogius were Christians who did what?
It was interesting to see how the 3 religions lived harmoniously for a while, but then persecutions started again.  We can see how the dislike and distrust between these 3 religions came about.  Saladin lived during this time period.  Keep him in mind as we read about the relationships between these religions!
Before you begin your timeline, take a minute to remember what I taught you on Friday last week about timelines.  They must have dates listed and the dates need to be in equal segments.  Then you put the pictures on your timeline where they belong.  I gave you pictures to use in class today.  I hope that helps if you choose to use them.
Memory Cards need to be completed also.  Take a minute to remember what we talked about in class today about how to write them.  Look in the front of your book at Memory Cards, if you cannot remember. Ask yourself some questions before you write the summary like: when did ___ live? Die? What were his/her accomplishments?  Why is this important to history? (If it isn't a person)  When did ___ happen? Why?

Your assignments are:

Wednesday 1 February 2012
1. Page 187: "All Students": Memory Cards for lessons 31-33.
2. Page 187: 33C: #1: choose c or d.  Answer the questions I put on the board for you, write a short paragraph about the topic.  You need to google the topic to get your answers.

Thursday 2 February 2012
1. Page 189: Wall of Fame.
2. Page 189: "Somewhere in Time": #1: Read the paragraph right before #1.  I went over this briefly in class so you need to read it to understand your work.  Then read #1 carefully.  You are to find the latitude and longitude (coordinates) of Beaufort regardless of where you live.

Note: Please bring markers and/or colored pencils to class on Friday.

Class Notes

Friday January 27, 2012
After sharing the pictures we got on the Dunhuang caves and Wu Zetian's tomb, we reviewed the two chapters: 31 and 32.  Did dragons, monsters, and dinosaurs exist at the same time as man?  According to the Bible, there were Leviathans as well as Behemoths and dragons! Check out Job chapters 40, 41; Ps.74, and 104; as well as Is. 27:1.  If we believe as we say we do that the Bible is the Word of God and is true......
check it out for yourself.
I assigned extra credit for this new nine weeks.  You may do 1 or both.  Each one that you do will replace your lowest grade(s).  Remember that you need to do these projects seriously and well above what is normally expected.  They need to be FANTASTIC!!  If you choose to use poster board, then you may use markers.  If you choose to use cardboard, then you are required to use paint.  You do NOT have to use the Activity Supplement for your shield, but it DOES have to be life size.  The instructions for the shield may be helpful, however.  Read them just in case.  You must make the shield AND the sword which is for one (1) grade.  The 2 projects are due by March 16.  I am NOT going to remind you of this.  This is your extra credit and you are to remember everything about it. I don't erase these blogs so you can go back and read if you forget something.  That is YOUR responsibility.
We also went over how to do a timeline.  Please don't wait until the end of the 9 weeks to correct yours or to start a new timeline.  Get it ready to go now.  The same for your Memory Cards.  Go ahead and put the title, vol.# and edition, and Lesson # on your cards.  You can then put the summary on after we read the lesson and review.  You could do Lessons 31 and 32 now.
Some of you are STILL not turning in your work on time.  This is very disturbing to me.  If this is you, then you need to get a folder that is marked Homework, and, as you finish ANY homework, it goes in that folder so that whatever the class, you look in that folder and there is the homework you did.  I am going to start taking off points for late homework.  It is going to be 5 points per day unless you were absent.  Absent students get a day for every day they are absent before points come off.

If it is taking you longer than 50 minutes to do your homework, please let me know.

Parents, I sent home History and Literature report cards at the end of Literature class today.  Please sign them and return them to me by Tuesday.  If you have questions or need copies, please call me at: 524-8034.  If you call my cell I may not get back to you.  I don't always have my cell or check it.  Please call my home phone.  Thank you.  I was disappointed in some of the grades this nine weeks.  If you are too, let's have a conference to straighten out any problems, please.  Call me.

Your assignments are:

Monday 30 January 2012
1. Pg. 182: 32C: #2-Write a paragraph about Caedmon.  Google "caedmon" and write about his birth, death, what his accomplishments were.  IF you can, bring in music from "Caedmon's Call".
2. Get Report cards signed.
3. Fix timelines and memory cards.

EXTRA CREDIT:
1. Pg. 181: 32A: follow directions.  Read Activity Supplement 32.
2. Pg. 181: 32B: Follow directions carefully.  Short paragraph should be on any similarities between these "monsters" and modern-day species.

WELCOME BACK, NOAH!!!

In class today, I gave you back your tests.  As I told you in class and on the blog, this was a very hard test.  I DID give you the questions in class the session before the test and instructed you to underline or highlight the answers; some of you did not participate and it showed on your results.  Everytime any of you talk off topic or cause a distraction, it affects everyone in the class.  The distaractor doesn't know who he/she may be causing to miss important instructions from me.  Our classes are spending too much time on distractions and not on the lesson.  We are having to wait on those who are not on task, and it is now a problem.  From now on, in our class, if you are a distraction and I have to speak to you more than one time, we will call your parents right then and invite them to spend a few days in class with you.  The work you are having to do at home is directly related to this because we are not able to get through the work we should be doing in class. The distractions will stop.
Your work for Fiday should not take you very long at all.  You need to find a picture and photocopy it, write a paragrah and read the rest of lesson 31 and all of 32.  If you do the photocopy and read lesson 32 on one day and do the paragraph and read the rest of lesson 31 on the second day, you should not be working on this more than 50 minutes each day.  If it takes you longer, look at what you are doing INSTEAD of the work assigned. I gave you the websites yesterday but I will put them here anyway.

Your assignments are:

Wednesday 25 January 2012
1.Read the rest of Lesson 31.
2. Page 179:31C:#3: Find an article on the web about Wu Zetian's tomb and read it.  Do not choose the wikipedia site.  After you have read an article on the tomb, answer the question the author raises about the tomb.  A short paragraph!

Thursday 26 January 2012
1. Read lesson 32: Beowulf"
2. Page 178:31B:#2 Read the directions. Just make a photocopy of the cave. Bring it to class. Be able to tell us about your picture.

WEBSITES FOR TOMB AND CAVES:
Google: Wu Zetian's tomb  (this is the easiest way to get several articles ansd you can choose the one that interests you!)  The one that follows is long and involved, but you can use it.
http://www.china.org/  "Qianling Mausoleum of the Tang Dynasty"
Remember, you are trying to find out what they have done with her tomb, that's all you need to be concerned with.
For the caves, I just googled "dunhuang caves" and the second site on the page gave MANY images to choose from.  Open the site, right click on an image, scroll down and click on "print piture".  You're done!  It took me less than 5 minutes to do this assignment!

Today we took a really difficult test.  I did warn you it was going to be hard and I encouraged you to study.  I am sorry some of you did not pay attentin on Tuesday and did not underline or highlight what I asked of you. I will grade those over the weekend and we will go over them on Tuesday.
You have a great deal of map work top do over the weekend.  If I were you I would do some of it before Monday.  You may find you don't have time to finish.  We will do the world map on Tuesday in class. In order to do 1 f, you will have to google capital cities of countries.  The answers are on page 173, but it doesn't tell you where to put them.  You will need to do some research.  For page 173 2B, color each country a different color;  2G, just draw a black line from Mecca to Medina. Don't use string.  Bring both completed maps to class on Tuesday.

Class Assignments

Tuesday 10 January 2012
Today you got back your notebooks, some papers and your tests .  The notebook grades were disappointing at best.  When I tell you to file something, please listen and file it where I tell you right then!  I am NOT going to hunt for papers that I tell you over and over to file in a certain place.  I am not going to check your pockets in the notebooks or look in some random place.  It is YOUR responsibility to file tha papers I tell you to file. Today you should have filed your test behind "miscellaneous."  I hope all of you did so.  As I said in class, I was disappointed that all of you didn't get the first page of the test and the top half of the second page completely right!  I told you it was on the test yet some of you failed to memorize that part of it. Those grades were not as good as I would've liked them.  You need to heed what I say in class.
We read Lesson 28 after taking the Pretest 10.  It was so exciting to me to see how many of you had already taken the pretest.  Great!  It shows me you are reading the blog!
Remember in your homework for tomorrow, copy the chart on pages 159-160.  The ones on 160 you will have to answer the 2 special notes yourself.  That is why you should read over the highlighted or underlined parts of Lesson 28 that we did together in class!  After you have completed the chart, file it behind "Asia."
Your assignments for Wednesday and Thursday are:

Wednesday 11 January 2012
1. Do page 159: 28C: #4: copy and complete the chart; file.
2.  Page 158: "All Students": Write the receipe for Moon Cakes; file.
Write 2 additional ways people celebrate the Chinese Moon Festival that have
not been written in the question on pg. 158. Bring to class.

Thursday 12 January 2012
1. Read Lesson 29.
2. Bring Saladin to class.
Get Memory Cards and Wall of Fame up to date.
