Class Notes

Tuesday February 28, 2012
Welcome back from break!  I hope everyone had a great break!  It sounded like all of you did.
Today in class we discussed the meaning of Matthew 22:21.  Remember that Jesus calls us to honor that which is Caesar's but not to put it above that which is God's.  It is a fine line when you really think about it.  Good discussion today.  We also talked about the separation of church and state.  One os the reasons for Trinity is this very issue.  We are trying to raise up strong Christians in our student body along with a very good classical education.  We also talked about ans heard some of The Song of Roland the epic poem written about Charlemagne and his nephew, Roland.  The differences between fiction and history is amazing.  The account in the epic poem, the account in the Son of Charlemagne, and the account in our history book were all different.  We know that the history book is the one we should trust.  That was an interesting comparison.

Your assignments are:

Wednesday 29 February 2012     LEAP YEAR!!

I hope all of you gave your valentines to your mothers.  I also hope all of you had a great valentine's day.  I did!
Today in class we read and discussed Lesson 37, "Charlemagne."  We learned a little more about the man, Charles the Great, his family, as well as his life.  Some of it was commendable, some of it was not, but it was all interesting.

Have a Great Break!

Your assignment is:

Monday 27 February 2012
1. Pg. 210:37B: Just write the definitions of the words I had you mark in class.  You will need these for Tuesday  Feb. 28.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!
Tuesday February 14,2012
Today as we ate Valentine's cupcakes, we reviewed Lesson 36.  We worked on map skills from SomeWhere in Time, page 204.  We labeled France, Spain, the cities of Tours and Poitier, then we drew a line for the Battle of Tours and labeled it with the date it was fought: 732.  These are now hanging in our classroom so if you want to see them, come have a look! When everyone was finished with that, we got out our Bibles and looked up the 4 verses from page 203:36C.  We wrote the verse then what it meant for "me" in this 21st century.  Those we filed behind Europe.

Your assignments are:

Wednesday 15 February 2012
1. Complete memory cards for lessons 34-36.
2. Page 205: On a separate sheet of paper, put each of the 4 groups in order.  Each group, I-IV, are out of order, place a number 1-5 to place each of them in order with the oldest event being #1.

I am so proud of this class!  The tests this time were wonderful.  Thanks, guys, for studying!  It was fun to grade them!  Don't forget to get them signed!
Your presentations today of the object lessons were pretty good.  You need to listen to the directions and read the blog to make sure you are doing exactly what I asked for.  Some of you didn't pay attention to the directions to get your Bible verses from the Gospel, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  Then you were supposed to memorize your verse and present it to the class with your object lesson.  Maybe I wasn't clear enough on the instructions, but I thought you all understood.  When you aren't sure of the assignment, you need to let me know so I can explain it to you again.  Please call me or email me if you have questions.  OK?
We reviewed LEssons 34 and 35 today.  Iconoclasts were qll Christians like you and me.  That is what made the persecutions even more horrible.  And the worse was Constantine V!
You got 2 more extra credit assignments today.  Have you been working on the other 2 I assigned?  You now have 4.  If you wait until the last minute to do these, they will not be as good as if you start on them this weekend.  You might want to think about that.  Only one student has turned in extra credit.

Your assignments are:

Monday 13 February 2012
1. Get tests signed.
2. Read Lesson 36.
3. Start working on extra credit if you are planning to do it.

Today after we took our test, we had a lively discussion about heaven and hell.  I enjoyed our discussion, even though sometimes I feel like I am "preaching to the choir".  Your insights never cease to amaze me!
You all are so astute.

Your assignments are:

Wednesday 8 February 2012
1. Review Lesson 34.  If you did not read it in class, please do so now.  OR if you didn't finish reading it, do so now.
2. Read Lesson 35.
3. Page 197: 34C: presentation:  Find an object, find a Bible passage that fits, write and memorize a devotional (like Boniface did with the evergreen), write down to turn in the Bible passage and the object (NOT YOUR DEVOTIONAL!).  Present to class Friday.

Friday February 3, 2012
Sorry this is so late getting posted.  It has been a hectic week and end of week.  Hope your team wins tonight's Super Bowl.  I doubt if I watch it, so whichever team wins is fine with me!
Friday was a little talkative, but, like I said, you were working on map skills so it was ok.  However, I want you to understand that talking is not ok when we are taking notes or reading or reviewing what we have read.  Everyone needs to respect the rights of others in the class to pay attention and hear whether you want to or not.
The maps we were working on were too small to get the symbols all on there in the appropriate place, but you guys did pretty well.  I did say to cut them as small as possible because I had already tried to do it and found it as difficult as you did!  But we did it!
Remember, for your test you need to MEMORIZE pages 175, 191, and 192.  I expect everyone to make at least a 95!  EVERYONE!!!  So get busy memorizing/learning those pages please!

Your assignments are:

Monday 6 February 2012
1. Study for test on lessons 31-33.
